Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI) is a non-profit global scientific, research, innovation, education, licensing and public health organisation dedicated to providing creative and advanced solutions to ensure the provision of excellent vision for everyone, everywhere. The Institute’s mission includes developing new solutions for vision care, especially refractive error and early disease detection, and to eliminate vision impairment and avoidable blindness, thereby raising the quality of life for all people, everywhere and helping to reduce disability and poverty for those in need. BHVI, South Africa implemented the project “GIVING SIGHT TO SOWETO” (GSS) supported by SEEING IS BELEIVING (SIB) program of the Standard Chartered Bank.

“This document is the outcome of a consultative process to elaborate international standards on vision rehabilitation. The process, which began in 2014, culminated in the International Consensus Conference on Vision rehabilitation, Rome (Italy) 9 – 12 December 2015. It was organized by the World Health Organization and supported by the Italian National Reference Centre for Services and Research for the Prevention of Blindness and Rehabilitation of the Visually Impaired, a WHO Collaborating Centre.”

The Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) + Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) was a Brien Holden Vision Institute (the Institute) project, conducted in cooperation with the Institute’s partner in Papua New Guinea (PNG) – PNG Eye Care.  It was supported under a research grant from The Fred Hollows Foundation.

The first national survey on eye health in Papua New Guinea (PNG) has found that the prevalence of blindness among people aged 50 years and older is 5.6%, which is one of the highest rates in the world.

Uncorrected presbyopia is the most common cause of visual impairment. There are approximately 1.04 billion people with presbyopia globally, of which 517 million have visual impairment due to a lack of appropriate near vision correction¹.

Given the critical need for good near vision in performing daily tasks⁴ and the scale of presbyopia as a form of visual impairment, IAPB recommends that presbyopia be prioritized and addressed. The principles that IAPB endorses are related to the method of correction, human resources, and health system fit, utilizing best practice or minimum standards depending on the specific context.

The Seeing is Believing project (SiB) was implemented on the 1st of October 2014 and is expected to end on the 30th September 2017 and it was implemented in three provinces namely Mashonaland West, Manicaland and Harare Metropolitan. The project has the following six major components:

1) Renovations & Infrastructure development;
2) Supply of medical equipment and consumables;
3) Subsidised cataracts (adults & Paediatric);
4) Staff Trainings (OPNs, PHC nurses, VHWs and instruments technicians);
5) Community sensitisation meetings on eye care and screening of cataract patients; and
6) Supply of subsidised spectacles for Adults and children.
