The IAPB School Eye Health Workgroup has released the “Standard Guidelines for Comprehensive School Eye Health programmes”. These school eye health guidelines should help deliver standardised comprehensive eye health services to more than 700 million children attending schools around the world.

The document covers a range of topics, including promoting hygiene and a healthy diet; addressing social stigma; screening, detection and referral of children along with timely interventions (like providing spectacles); low vision services; reducing eye morbidity due to harmful practices; and, detection and treatment of common clinical conditions.

The document also includes case studies and likely challenges school eye health programmes could encounter. It is a practical document with recommendations and a list of appropriate equipment and technology.

These guidelines are for you, if:

• You are involved in school health or eye health
• You are a policy maker, a manager, a service provider
• You are a stakeholder or a member of the education community
• You are simply interested in making peoples’ lives better

The Team Leader for the Mid Term Review would like to express his sincere appreciation and thanks to the participants who contributed their ideas to the Mid Term Review in Da Nang, Hai Duong and Tien Giang during the field trips in November 2017. The Mid Term Review team had the opportunity to meet face to face with key stakeholders of the project, including the three Project Management Boards with members from the Provincial Department of Education and Training and the Department of Health, District Department of Education and Training, School Principals, School Nurses, Staff of Youth Unions/Pioneer Teachers, Teachers and students and Refractionists at Optical shops. The inputs from these participants were invaluable in learning first hand feedback on the Viet Nam Child Eye Care Project.

A pilot project “A Comprehensive Rural Eye Care Model (CRECM) in Yunnan Province-increasing access for disadvantaged groups to universal eye care” which was launched by Fred Hollows Foundation (FHF) in April 2016 will be finished in March 2019. The total budget of the project is 1,195,160 USD. The project addresses 3 main causes of avoidable blindness, cataract, RE and DR in a comprehensive way which is strictly in line with the National Prevention of Blindness Plan and The FHF’s Strategy. The objectives of the project include: to strengthen the capacity of public health personnel to deliver quality, sustainable, comprehensive eye-care services; to increase the availability and accessibility of integrated eye care services within the existing health system in pilot locations; to generate data & evidence to inform eye health planning, improve quality of interventions and document the CRECM; and to strengthen provincial prevention of blindness, hospital management and civil society to advocate for policy development and replication of the CRECM in Yunnan and other provinces in China.
