Prevalence of blindness in Indonesia continues to be high. To overcome visual impairment in Indonesia, various efforts are needed including promotive, preventative, curative and rehabilitative action. Participation and contribution from cross-programmer and across sectors, as well as partners, in the implementation of these visual visual impairment control programme are welcome. This roadmap can be used as a reference for the implementation of visual impairment control programmeat national and regional levels for short, medium and long term.

Visual impairment is a global public health problem. Recent estimates from WHO suggest that 253 million people suffer from visual impairment, of whom 36 million are completely blind. Cataract and uncorrected refractive errors are the leading causes of visual impairment in most parts of the developing world, including India. According to the National Programme for the Control of Blindness (NPCB), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India Survey on Blindness (2006-2007) these two causes constitute about 81% blindness in the age group 50 years and above.

With support from Standard Chartered Bank under the “Seeing is Believing” initiative, Sightsavers is strengthening eye care services in the Sundarbans region of West Bengal State in Eastern India. The objective of the five-year project is to contribute to the elimination of avoidable blindness in the area. In order to assess the success of the Sundarbans Eye Health Service Strengthening Project, Sightsavers conducted surveys to investigate eye health status and health seeking behaviour at both the beginning and end of the projects to assess any changes that may have taken place. This report describes the results of the endline study.

The CHEER project has been a far reaching, multi-stakeholder and comprehensive project including four international non-government organisations, that aimed to raise the levels of child eye health within Shanxi province.

Training was delivered at all levels to improve knowledge, increase understanding and enhance skills for the best possible vision for all children. Eye health promotion was delivered in several different locations, including village communities, schools, rehabilitation centres and hospitals. The engagement of many sectors and the subsequent networks created between them, has resulted in robust referral pathways for the prompt referral of identified cases to the appropriate eye health professionals in the most convenient location.

The IAPB School Eye Health Workgroup has released the “Standard Guidelines for Comprehensive School Eye Health programmes”.
