The population prevalence of blindness in Sierra Leone is estimated at 0.7% affecting 43,842 people, while the prevalence of blindness in people over 50 years of age is estimated as 5.9%, according to the most recently available national data¹. More than 90% of all blindness in Sierra Leone is also avoidable, which is significantly higher than the global average of 80%². In 2012, Sightsavers was awarded two complementary five-year grants from the European Commission (EC) and Seeing is Believing (SiB), which together have enabled comprehensive support to the Sierra Leone Eye Care Programme across all four of the country’s regions. This evaluation report focuses on the latter of these two grants – Sightsavers Comprehensive Eye Care in Sierra Leone Project.

In view of the rising trend of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Pakistan, pilot projects on prevention and control of DR were implemented in different parts of the country over the last ten years in collaboration with national government and non-government partners and international eye care partners, mainly Sightsavers and the Fred Hollows Foundation.

An initiative was taken by Sightsavers in collaboration with the National Coordinator, Pakistan National Eye Health Programme, and the Chairperson for the National Task Force on Diabetic Retinopathy to conduct a learning review of programme approaches for DR and determine strategies for the future decade.

“Integrated care for diabetes and eye health: A global compendium of good practice” documents a series of “real world” case studies that showcase current initiatives to advance integrated care for DR across the spectrum of health promotion, prevention, early intervention and treatment in a range of different contexts and resource settings. The compendium has been designed to help fill a crucial knowledge gap and to strengthen the existing evidence base through providing insights on a range of different models, lessons learned and key recommendations on how to effectively implement integrated care.

Drawing on evidence from a range of projects and programmes showing promising results from 17 countries, the document will provide guidance to policy makers, medical organisation service providers and social investors. This has been developed by the partners of the Global Diabetic Retinopathy Advocacy Initiative.

The initiative is a multi-agency advocacy project being undertaken by leading non-government agencies in the diabetes and eye health sectors from 2017-2018. The current Leadership Group for the initiative includes: The Fred Hollows Foundation; Helen Keller International; The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness; International Council of Ophthalmology; International Diabetes Federation; Lions Clubs International Foundation; Orbis International; Sightsavers International; The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust; World Council of Optometry; and in association with the World Health Organization.

The CHEER project has been a far reaching, multi-stakeholder and comprehensive project including four international non-government organisations, that aimed to raise the levels of child eye health within Shanxi province.

Training was delivered at all levels to improve knowledge, increase understanding and enhance skills for the best possible vision for all children. Eye health promotion was delivered in several different locations, including village communities, schools, rehabilitation centres and hospitals. The engagement of many sectors and the subsequent networks created between them, has resulted in robust referral pathways for the prompt referral of identified cases to the appropriate eye health professionals in the most convenient location.
