A guide to gender-responsive eye health programming for practitioners in the field. The manual presents a set of guiding principles for good practice when it comes to gender-targeted and gender-mainstreamed projects. It is complemented by 11 evidence-based case studies that were developed in close collaboration with the organisations whose work is featured in the case studies. Each case study illustrates good practice to reduce gender inequity in eye health under the WHO health system strengthening pillars.

This guide is a collaboration between 11 eye health organisations (LAICO/Aravind, KCCO, Orbis, Brien Holden Vision Institute, Seva Canada, Pathfinder International, Nari Uddug Kendra (NUK), Sightsavers, Vision 2020 Australia, and The Fred Hollows Foundation).

A paper authored by Dr Taraprasad Das, IAPB Regional Chair for SEA, Mr Yuddha Dhoj Sapkota, the regional coordinator and the ten IAPB country chairs of the region (along with other partners), reviews eye care service delivery in the South East Asia region and assesses progress towards Universal Eye Health.

It looks at each SEA country’s eye care service profile, health indices, blindness and low vision prevalence, national eye health policy, eye health expenses, insurance and out of pocket expenses, Integration of eye health into the national health system, the strength of eye health personnel, cataract surgery rate and involvement of non-governmental sector in eye health services in the region.

Uncorrected Refractive Error (URE) is a major cause of public health concern. URE not only has an important impact on the physical and mental wellbeing of the people whose lives are affected by this condition, but it creates an economic burden on countries and societies – it was estimated in 2012 that the annual global productivity loss due to uncorrected refractive error is 269 billion international dollars.

This IAPB report looks at the current data on spectacle coverage, in 27 countries where national level data are available. Spectacle coverage is presented for both distance vision and near vision loss due to URE.
